Professor John Griffith
House:Fairwater
Class Of:1937
Deceased:
Outstanding and controversial public Lawyer. Throughout his career he sought to confound those who claimed that the judiciary was neutral. He was scathing about what he regarded as the judges’ right-wing predilections, as revealed in their verdicts and remarks about cases involving free speech, civil liberties, trade unions, racial discrimination and conspiracy. It was because of his belief in their bias that Griffith wanted to limit the influence of judges on public policy, opposed a Bill of Rights and would not rely on judicial activism to safeguard liberties. He preferred to trust the democratic process, with a strong House of Commons to hold ministers to account, and more open government. As well as tormenting judges, he was a thorn in the side of university managers. He was a founder and very active member of the Council of Academic Freedom and Democracy, which took up cases of alleged abuses of academic staff by university authorities. In 1986 he attracted national attention when he stood against the Marchioness of Anglesey, the official university nominee, to be Chancellor of the University of Manchester, in succession to the Duke of Devonshire. There had never been a contest before, let alone any questioning of the nomination of the university authorities. However, many of the academic staff had grown concerned at what was happening in higher education and wanted somebody with some intellectual standing rather than a social figure. Griffith, the insurgent candidate, won easily, staff and students were delighted, and the university managers were humiliated at the implied vote of no confidence.
Antony Rushford CMG
House:Fairwater
Class Of:1937
Deceased:
A leading expert in colonial and Commonwealth constitutional law and practice. Drafted many colonial and independence constitutions for countries which would become members of the Commonwealth. Retiring from the FCO as deputy legal adviser in 1982, he became principal legal adviser to the British Indian Ocean Territory (which includes Diego Garcia), Attorney General of Anguilla, Attorney-General of St Helena, and - briefly - legal adviser to the Governor-General of the Caribbean island-state of Grenada after the US intervention in that country. He was a constitutional adviser to St Kitts-Nevis and St Lucia. Drafting the constitutions of the more advanced colonies, and independence constitutions for future members of the Commonwealth, involved reducing to writing many of the principles underlying Britain's unwritten constitution, as well as in the inclusion of chapters on human rights. Antony was one of the great exponents of this art. He played a leading role in negotiating the terms of independence, and drafting independence constitutions for many Commonwealth countries, including Kenya, Cyprus, Mauritius, Antigua, Dominica, Grenada, St Lucia, St Vincent and St Kitts-Nevis. In the course of this work he came to know, and earned the respect of, many leaders of future independent members of the Commonwealth, including Jomo Kenyatta, in Kenya, Julius Nyerere, in Tanzania, Archbishop Makarios, in Cyprus, and Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, in Mauritius. They would consult him from time to time after independence as a person with a deep understanding of their constitutional arrangements and heritage.
